Apple Enhances Device Sharing and App Management for Enterprise

New features in Return to Service, Authenticated Guest Mode, and Managed App framework streamline device deployment and control for businesses and educational institutions.

Shared devices

streamlining device management for shared environments, Apple has enhanced it’s Return to Service system. This system simplifies the process of sharing devices among multiple users by automatically reapplying default apps and configurations each time a device is reassigned. The updated Return to Service now extends support to Vision Pro, ensuring app preservation and efficient deployment in shared work settings. Similarly, iPhones and iPads can now retain managed apps even after a reset, though user data is still wiped for privacy.

Addressing the need for secure and seamless access to shared Macs, Apple has introduced Authenticated guest Mode. This feature allows users to log into a Mac using their cloud identity, ensuring that personal data is fully removed after each session, preparing the device for the next user.Further enhancing convenience, users can securely log into a properly configured shared Mac by tapping their iPhone or apple Watch, or by using an NFC reader. This functionality is expected to be notably beneficial in schools, universities, healthcare facilities, and retail environments.

Apple’s Return to Service system makes it much easier to share devices between users, with default apps and configurations re-applied each time a device is passed across.

App Management

Focusing on improvements to app management, Apple has introduced the new Managed App framework for iPad, iPhone, and visionOS. this framework enables organizations to deploy app configurations, including certificates and identities, on managed devices.Among the key enhancements, IT departments can now restrict apps to specific versions, providing greater control over the update process. On macOS tahoe, App Store apps, custom apps, and packages can be deployed using Declarative Device Management. Developers can also leverage the new ManagedApp framework when building applications. Furthermore, IT administrators can now manage Safari settings to ensure that bookmarks are consistently in place and that a designated employee or school portal is set as the default Safari start page.
