The DMA legislation uses the term gatekeeper to refer to large platforms that have enough users to influence the market.
To enter this category, services must have more than 45 million users per month and more than 10,000 business customers in the last three fiscal years.
The two Apple products can now be considered for gatekeepers, according to the latest figures sent by the American company.
European officials will analyze the situation and decide whether Apple Maps and Apple Ads will become gatekeepers. Apple has already sent an official communication claiming that the two products should not be classified as such, having small market shares in Europe compared to those of other companies.
But if they become gatekeepers, Apple Maps and Apple Ads will join other Apple products already in this situation, such as iOS, iPadOS, the App Store and Safari.
Platforms considered gatekeepers are subject to a stricter set of rules regarding data moderation, management and protection.
