Apple & AI: How Apps Boost Revenue Despite Tech Gap

CUPERTINO / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Apple generates significant revenue from third-party AI apps, even though the company itself is not a leader in AI technology. Revenue from the App Store could exceed the billion mark for the first time in 2026.

Apple has positioned itself as one of the main beneficiaries of the AI revolution without being at the technological forefront itself. While other tech giants invest billions in developing AI infrastructure, Apple is using its role as gatekeeper of the App Store to capitalize on the successes of others. This strategy has proven to be extremely lucrative as revenue from third-party AI apps continues to rise.

Apple’s App Store charges fees of up to 30 percent on subscriptions taken out through the platform. This has resulted in Apple being able to generate around $900 million in revenue from generative AI applications in 2025 alone. A key driver of this growth is OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is responsible for a majority of fee revenue. Despite a slight decline in chatbot downloads, the flow of money through ongoing subscriptions remains stable.

Interestingly, Apple is lagging behind in its own AI development. The in-house assistant Siri is often viewed as less powerful compared to modern conversational AIs. Nevertheless, Apple has developed a clever strategy by relying on the strengths of its competitors. Through partnerships like the one with Google, which uses Gemini for complex queries on Apple devices, Apple can outsource the compute-intensive work while benefiting from App Store fees.

However, in the long term, Apple’s reliance on third-party apps could pose risks. If user behavior changes to favor integrated, in-system assistants, Apple may need to invest in developing its own, competitive AI solutions. Still, Apple remains in a strong position for now as demand for AI apps continues and the global dominance of its mobile devices gives the company a significant advantage.
