Aoife McCoy’s Unusual Birth: A Tale of Mahon Point’s 20 Years

In a remarkable coincidence that marks Mahon Point Shopping Centre’s 20-year anniversary, the centre stands out not only for its consumer offerings but also for a unique family story. Six-year-old Aoife McCoy was born right outside the entrance of Mahon Point on St. Brigid’s Day, February 1, 2019, during her parents’ anxious haste to reach the hospital.

A Mother’s Hasty Journey

Maeve Moroney, a mother of two and resident of Ballintotis in east Cork, shares a story that has become a cherished family anecdote. On a brisk morning, Maeve and her husband Dominic, situated with their older son Cormac and expecting their second child, found themselves in a crisis. Dr. appointments were due for February 1, and Maeve was experiencing early contractions.

Despite the traffic jam in the tunnel towards Mahon Point, the family proceeded, deciding to seek help rather than waiting any longer. “Typically, there was a tail-back of traffic in the tunnel,” Maeve recalls. “It came to a point that I had to tell Dominic to pull in somewhere and call 999.”

Little did they know it was the beginning of an unconventional birth tale. Maeve was in labour as they approached Mahon Point, arriving just in time for an ambulance to arrive with a garda escort.

A Dramatic Entry into the World

In the parking lot of the shopping centre, surrounded by morning stillness, Aoife made her dramatic debut. Maeve explains, “In one minute, out she came!” The precise parking spot is still a vivid memory, parked at an angle at the front entrance of Mahon Point Shopping Centre.

The experience was intense and memory-making, with Maeve’s contractions two minutes apart as they waited for medical assistance. “I don’t know the name of the ambulance guys,” Maeve reveals, “But they were brilliant.” Aoife was a healthy 7lbs 9oz, soon being checked by medical staff at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUH).

A Nod to Mahon Point’s Spirit

Much to the family’s delight, this unique birth story captured the attention not only of their local community but also of the shopping centre management. Maeve and Dominic abandoned the family car, safekeeping managed by a kind security staff member, to join the ambulance en route to the hospital.

Soon, news of this remarkable birth echoed around Mahon Point. “We were congratulated afterwards on Mahon Point’s Facebook page which was really nice. And we were on their Instagram page. We were a real novelty!” shares Maeve, emphasizing the pride in which the family held their story.

A Shared Birthdate

Interestingly, Aoife shares her birthday with the legendary shopping centre, both celebrating February 1, 2019. Though the birth certificate lists CUH as Aoife’s birthplace, given the circumstances, it’s Mahon Point that she and her family hold dear.

Planning and celebrating Aoife’s six-year-old birthday turned into a memorable day, filled with trips to Mahon Point. “Aoife always reminds me of her birthday and of her birthplace when we go shopping or go for a meet-up with her aunt and her cousins at Mahon Point,” Maeve elaborates, proudly pointing out how family ties and the shopping centre intertwine.

A Shopping Centre That Grows with Families

Mahon Point Shopping Centre has been more than just a retail hub to the Moroney family; it is a focal point for family gatherings and memories. Maeve explains, “We love having family occasions and family gatherings at Mahon Point. My sister lives in Bandon and we often meet up at Mahon Point for a coffee and a catch-up.”

The shopping centre’s versatility caters to families’ evolving needs. “When the children were small, my sister and I could easily get around the shopping centre with our buggies. It was contained. It was safe and it was warm and dry. Now the kids are bigger we can enjoy a visit to the cinema at Mahon Point and enjoy a bite to eat there afterwards,” adds Maeve.

A Family’s Loyalty to Clarks

Loyalty to certain brands like Clarks has developed within the family, making regular shopping visits to the store a no-brainer. “We think it must be Clarks shoe shop!” says Maeve, highlighting how the family often turns to Clarks for its helpful and friendly staff.

Maeve and Aoife’s story is an testament to the support and community aspect Mahon Point extends beyond mere consumerism. Clare O’Brien, Marketing Manager at Mahon Point Shopping Centre, sums up their role poignantly. “People see the shopping centre as a great location to meet up and combine a shopping experience and a dining experience together.”
