Anti-ICE Protests: Minneapolis & US Demonstrations

Demonstrations e Protests against Donald Trump’s deportation policy and his anti-immigrant police took place in Minneapolis and many other American cities. For the second Friday in a row, thousands of people braved the cold, skipping school, work and closing commercial activities, to participate in a demonstration in front of the federal building in the Minnesota city, which has become the center of the protest against the operation that for weeks has plunged the city into chaos and caused the death of two American citizens, killed by federal agents.

“No matter what your beliefs are, all we can say now as business owners is that ICE is bad for business,” said the owner of one of the Minneapolis cafes. The demonstrators then marched chanting the slogan, ‘please stop killing us‘please stop killing us.

Protests also took place in other American cities, with teachers’ strikes forcing the authorities to close schools Colorado and Arizona. A Washington a thousand people blocked an intersection in the center of the capital, while a Chicago always a thousand people braved the cold to gather in Daley Plaza in the evening. “Now I won’t stop, I will never stop.” This is what Don Lemon declared, the journalist, former CNN presenterfollowing his release after being arrested yesterday in Los Angeles after being accused of participating in an anti-Ice protest in a Minneapolis church which allegedly interrupted a service and violated the religious freedom rights of the faithful present.

“There is no more important time than now for free and independent media to shine a light on the truth and hold those in power accountable,” he said, adding that the Justice Department sent federal agents to arrest him “for something I’ve done for 30 years, covering news. The First Amendment protects my work and that of countless other journalists who do what I do.”

District Judge Patricia Donahue ordered Lemon released without bail after federal prosecutors said the journalist joined “the mob that terrorized people at a place of worship.” In reality it was a peaceful protest by a group of activists against the fact that one of the pastors of St Paul’s Church is also head of the Minneapolis ICE office. In recent days the leaders of this protest have been arrested. Former vice president and former White House candidate Kamala Harris said Lemon’s arrest “is another affront to our rights and freedoms that should alarm and anger everyone.”
