Concerns over immigration policies and a perceived lack of empathy have led to a noticeable absence of key Mexican fan groups at the Gold Cup.

The Sofi stadium in Inglewood, California, hosted the Mexican team’s Gold Cup debut before 54,309 fans, yet the stadium appeared less vibrant than expected, with over 15,000 seats unoccupied.

Notable absences included “Cielito Lindo“, “Patronos” and “Pancho Villa’s Army“, groups that chose not to attend due to concerns over migratory raids ordered by the president of the United States, Donald Trump. This decision was compounded by what fans perceived as a “lack of empathy” from strategist Javier Aguirre when questioned on the matter. As one fan stated, “If we keep seeing that we cannot be all, none will be.”

“It feels, definitely, fear. When you go out to the street, you breathe people’s fear. the streets are very alone. It reminds me a little to the pandemic, when you could not leave home,” said Paco Rubén and Livette Ruvalcaba, coordinators of Cielito Lindo,in an interview with the Global Deportes.

The final catalyst for the boycott was reportedly Javier Aguirre’s silence on the sensitive issue.

“It feels, definitely, fear. When you go out to the street, you breathe people’s fear.”
