Following a disappointing season, tottenham Hotspur have parted ways with their head coach, Ange postecoglou, announcing the decision on Friday.
The club stated that the change was essential for them “to compete on multiple fronts.” Postecoglou, 59, had previously led Spurs to a Europa League title after a victory against manchester United in last monthS final, securing Champions League qualification. However, the team also suffered 22 league defeats under his leadership, finishing 17th and barely avoiding relegation.
Sources indicate that chairman Daniel Levy communicated the decision to Postecoglou after they both returned from their vacations earlier in the week. The club is now actively seeking a replacement, with potential candidates including Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Fulham‘s Marco Silva, and Bournemouth‘s Andoni Iraola.
Postecoglou’s departure comes after two seasons, with reports suggesting a £4 million ($5.4m) pay-off and a £2m bonus for the Europa League victory. In a statement, Tottenham stated: “Following a review of performances and after notable reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.”
The statement continued, “We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.”
However, “the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place.”
“It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and beleive a change of approach will give us the strongest chance…”
the club emphasized that the decision “could not base our decision on emotions” related to the Europa League win.
“It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond,” the statement added.
The club acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating,”This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude.”
“We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.”
The club concluded,”We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon. we shoudl like to express our gratitude to him. we wish him well for the future – he will always be welcome back at our home.”
