One of the most interesting features discovered in the latest Android Auto beta (v15.9) is support for Google Cast. If this function will be officially launched, drivers will be able to transmit content directly from their phone or tablet to the infotainment system screen, no longer limited to the applications integrated in Android Auto.
Basically, it would be a similar evolution to what we already see on many smart TV systems or portable speakers: instead of switching between native vehicle or phone applications, you can “throw” (cast) the desired audio or video content directly to the car screen. This extension could transform the way we use multimedia behind the wheel, offering a much greater level of flexibility — for example, for personalized playlists, podcasts or even videos at stops, without the exclusive dependence on pre-installed applications in the system.
Music player redesign — aesthetics and functionality
In addition to casting support, another big change concerns the music player interface in Android Auto. The code discovered in the beta hints at elements of Material 3 Expressive, Google’s modern visual language, which suggests a major visual refresh to the way music is displayed while driving.
This update isn’t just cosmetic — the changes can translate to more accessible steering wheel controls, a clearer presentation of information, and smoother integration between music apps and the car’s display. The goal is to reduce distractions and provide an intuitive experience without compromising on safety.
Towards a unified multimedia experience
Google has recently been working on a number of developments for Android Auto that go beyond music:
- more advanced AI interactions with Gemini Assistant, progressing towards more natural contextual conversation;
- potential extensible functionality for multimedia applications;
- visual improvements to playback elements, such as playback progress with new visual effects.
Combined, these developments mark a significant transformation of Android Auto: from a simple phone-mirroring interface to a responsible and complex in-car multimedia ecosystem — designed to make every journey more enjoyable without compromising safety behind the wheel.
