Google officially launched Android 16, the latest major iteration of its mobile operating system, on tuesday, June 10, 2025. the initial rollout of this update is limited to a select number of devices,with plans to expand compatibility to include more models from various manufacturers in the near future.

Prior to the official release, Google provided a sneak peek at Android 16 through the QPR1 Beta 1 program. This preview included security enhancements and introduced new functionalities slated for wider release as part of the September 2025 feature drop.

Android 16 Rollout Expected to Continue from Mid-2025

One of the key highlights of Android 16 is the introduction of the “Material 3 expressive design,” which brings visual enhancements to notifications, speedy settings, the lock screen, and the launcher. Users will also have greater flexibility in customizing wallpapers with new shapes and colors. Camera and media functions have been improved, offering better performance in low-light conditions and optimized image capture.Additionally, the update streamlines the process of assigning and managing registered fingerprints.

With the innovation, the new “material 3 expressive design” was introduced, which brings visual updates for notifications, quick settings, the lock screen and the launcher.

The beta version included the May 2025 security patch and supported Pixel models 6 through 9, and also the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Users could access the update via OTA (over-the-air) after registering for the Android beta program. Though, Google advised against installing the beta on primary devices due to potential stability issues and everyday usability concerns.

The rollout of android 16 began in mid-2025, starting with Google Pixel devices. While the specific list of compatible devices was initially unclear, technology news sources anticipate the update will be available for models from Google, Samsung, xiaomi, and Honor.
