Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2: Gemini Animation and Bug Fixes

Google is currently experimenting with a new launch animation for the Gemini overlay in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. The update also addresses a vibration issue.

The second beta version saw the removal of vibration feedback when using the “Press & hold power button” gesture to activate Gemini. While haptic feedback remained functional within the Power menu, the missing vibration for the Digital assistant option was suspected to be a software bug.

Now, Google is testing a revised launch animation for the Gemini overlay. Users involved in this A/B test will notice the return of the vibration. Upon activation, the active screen will begin to shrink.

As black borders converge from all sides, the Gemini overlay smoothly slides upwards, presenting options such as “Share screen with Live,” “Ask about screen,” and the “Ask Gemini” field, complete with its standard animation. Simultaneously, the window reverts to a fullscreen interface, enabling users to pose their questions.

The effect is visually appealing, creating the illusion of the display’s physical borders contracting. This feature is currently limited to select Pixel devices and is not yet widely available.

In addition to the Gemini launch animation, Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 includes A/B testing for a redesigned Pixel Launcher search field incorporating AI Mode. while this feature temporarily disappeared on some devices, the new gradient ‘G’ logo remains.
