Andrew Poturalski’s Big Night: A Veteran’s New Opportunity with the San Jose Sharks
Andrew Poturalski, known for his consistent performance in the AHL, is set to make his mark in the NHL. After his third appearance at the AHL All-Star Classic, the 31-year-old gets a chance to replace Mikael Granlund as center for the San Jose Sharks.
The Journey of Andrew Poturalski
Poturalski has been a Point Per Game player in the AHL for the past seven seasons, showcasing his offensive prowess consistently. However, his NHL experience is limited, with only six games spread over three years, earning him just two assists. Last season in Seattle, he played minimal minutes, averaging only 6.53 minutes per game in two appearances.
Despite his limited NHL exposure, he has proven to be a top scorer in the AHL. He was crowned the scoring champion in 2022 and leads the league again this season. This reliability and consistency have caught the eye of head coach Ryan Warsofsky.
Why Poturalski Deserves This Opportunity
Warsofsky, who coached Poturalski during the Calder Cup-winning season of the Chicago Wolves in 2021-22, believes this is a long-awaited chance for the veteran player.
“Usually, when he goes up, he’s playing that fourth-line center role, and that’s not really the role for him where he can succeed in,” Warsofsky mentioned.
Warsofsky’s decision to give Poturalski a more prominent role isn’t just based on potential but also on the player’s proven ability.
“We got to put him in a position to succeed, give an opportunity, and see what we can do with it,” Warsofsky stated. “He’s a guy that can play in that role, because he can play with the puck. He can make plays.”
Poturalski expressed his readiness for this challenge.
“Just got to go out and execute,” he said, “and prove that I can play here.”
Warsofsky summed up Poturalski’s situation succinctly: “I don’t know if he’s ever gotten this type of opportunity. I think he’s deserved this opportunity.”
