Before meeting Toni Morrison professionally, Andrea Davis Pinkney had already been captivated by Morrison’s works, which adorned the shelves of her childhood home. This shared literary landscape laid the foundation for their future friendship and mentorship.
“I grew up in a family where literature was front and center,” Davis Pinkney explains to PEOPLE. “Our stories are very parallel. Toni Morrison found power and joy in telling stories and sharing narratives, embracing the oral tradition integral to Black expression. Similarly, I was raised in an environment rich with storytelling.”
Early Life Parallels
Both women embarked on their educational journeys in integrated first-grade classrooms. Pinkney recalls, “We were steeped in the ‘stories, history, musicality, rhythm, syncopation’ that form the essence of great storytelling. These stories were empowering for both of us, helping us express ourselves as children.”
When it came time to write And She Was Loved: Toni Morrison’s Life in Stories, illustrated by Caldecott honoree Daniel Minter, Pinkney envisioned the book as more than a typical biography.
“To me, this is a praise poem—a love letter, an invitation, and a thank you to Toni Morrison,” Pinkney states. “It’s important for young readers to see Morrison as a child who, like them, used a chalk stick on sidewalks and discovered her storytelling magic.”
Interactive Storytelling
Pinkney aimed for the book’s structure to immerse children and their caregivers in the narrative.
“The beauty of a picture book is that it fosters interaction,” Pinkney elaborates. “Parents and children can read aloud, experience the story together, and appreciate Daniel Minter’s illustrations that complement the text, bringing the narrative to life visually.”
Pinkney views the book as both a beautiful object and a practical resource.
“It’s a jewel because of its evocative visuals and a tool for caregivers to share Toni Morrison’s legacy with younger generations, emphasizing her enduring body of work and the relevance of her narratives.”

Morrison’s Legacy
Reflecting on the late author’s intentions, Pinkney hopes Morrison would be pleased with her tribute.
“One of our final conversations was about the importance of books for young people. It’s my hope that Morrison would see this as an invitation for new readers to engage with picture books and her work, understanding its enduring impact and relevance.”
Message to Aspiring Writers
Pinkney concludes by emphasizing the book’s broader appeal.
“And She Was Loved is for anyone who enjoys stories, reading aloud, music, and the joy of vivid conversation. It’s for those who appreciate beautiful art and seek inspiration and illumination. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring legacy of Toni Morrison.”
And She Was Loved is now available wherever books are sold.
