Easing Supply Tensions: A Look at Amoxicillin and Beyond
Following a challenging period of shortages in 2022, the French National Agency for Medicines (ANSM) has announced a significant improvement in the availability of key antibiotics, especially amoxicillin, the most frequently prescribed antibiotic in France. This positive progress comes after a period of heightened concern regarding access to essential medications.
The ANSM stated in a recent press release that the supplies are regular and cover the needs of patients
. This marks a considerable turnaround from the supply chain disruptions experienced in previous years.
Gradual Improvement Across the Board
The positive trend extends beyond amoxicillin. Towards the close of 2024, health authorities had already observed a recovery in amoxicillin stocks compared to the preceding winter season. Furthermore, the ANSM notes the situation is gradually improving
for Clarithromycin, another antibiotic that saw high demand in oral form for pediatric use during the recent pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak across the nation. According to the world Health Organization (WHO),pertussis cases have been on the rise globally, highlighting the importance of stable antibiotic supplies.
strategic Measures to Prevent Future Shortages
While the overall situation has improved, some challenges remain, particularly concerning specific dosages of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combinations. Though, the ANSM emphasizes that even in these areas, the situation has improved significantly
during the 2024-2025 winter season. In response to these improvements, the ANSM is planning to relax some of the measures implemented to mitigate antibiotic supply tensions in anticipation of winter.
These measures include adjustments to the supply chain.Previously, pharmacies were required to source amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid exclusively through wholesalers. Now, they will also have the option to obtain these medications directly from manufacturers. This change aims to provide pharmacies with greater flexibility and potentially expedite the restocking process.
Additionally, the health authority intends to repeal the authorization for compounded amoxicillin preparations for children. These custom-made medications, prepared by pharmacists when standard formulations are unavailable, will no longer be necessary given the improved supply of commercially available options.
Stable Supplies of Other Essential Medications
Beyond antibiotics, the ANSM also reports that the coverage of needs is to date ensured
for other medications that were closely monitored during the winter months, including paracetamol, oral corticosteroids, and asthma treatments. This complete improvement in medication availability provides reassurance to both healthcare professionals and patients.
