Public Doubts Cloud Trump’s High-Profile Cabinet Picks

President-elect Donald Trump’s picks for key cabinet positions are facing scrutiny not only from Capitol Hill but also from the American public. A new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveals widespread uncertainty and disapproval for several of his most controversial choices.

Hegseth and Gabbard: Unknown Quantities

Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defense, and Tulsi Gabbard, his pick for Director of National Intelligence, are largely unknown to the public. While Hegseth boasts experience as an Army veteran and Fox News commentator, allegations of excessive drinking and a past sexual assault settlement cast a shadow over his candidacy.

Gabbard, a former Democrat who once sought the presidential nomination, resigned from the party and joined Trump’s campaign, raising eyebrows about her shifting allegiances. Her proximity to Syria and its now-former president, Bashar Assad, also fuels new questions surrounding her potential role in national intelligence.

Despite their name recognition gap, both nominees face public disapproval. Only 2 in 10 Americans approve of Hegseth’s nomination, compared to 3 in 10 who disapprove. Gabbard fares slightly better, with 2 in 10 approving and 3 in 10 disapproving.

Kennedy and Rubio: Familiar Faces, Divided Opinions

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s controversial choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services, enjoys higher name recognition, but it doesn’t translate into greater public support.

While only 14% of Americans say they don’t know enough about Kennedy, a sizeable 4 in 10 disapprove of his nomination. This suggests that his decades-long advocacy for false claims about vaccines is impacting public perception.

Marco Rubio’s selection for Secretary of State generates mixed reactions, too. 3 in 10 approve and an equal number disapprove, while 2 in 10 remain undecided. Rubio, a Cuban American Senator, receives higher approval from Hispanic adults compared to other nominees, but disapproval still outweighs approval.

Public Backlash Amidst Republican Control

With the Republicans holding a slim majority in the Senate, Trump’s nominees are facing tough confirmation hearings. The public disapproval polls suggest a potentially rocky road ahead for the president-elect as he faces both political and public skepticism towards his chosen team.

These polls underscore the challenges Trump might face in streamlining his agenda and fulfilling campaign promises given the public’s reservations regarding his cabinet selections.
