At least 92 US citizens died in hostilities in Ukraine, and several thousand Americans could take part in them, the New York Times (NYT) newspaper writes.
According to NYT, the most massive influx of American volunteers was at the beginning of the conflict, but they continue to arrive. At the same time, among them there were more people without combat experience, the elderly and at the same time veterans seeking to resume a military career. Some, in particular, regretted the missed opportunity to participate in hostilities in Iraq or Afghanistan. At the same time, American veterans are appreciated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (Armed Forces) are higher than veterans from other countries, since they are better prepared.
Note that in February 2024, Task & Purpose wrote about the death of at least 50 Americans in Ukraine, while at least 40 veterans were of them. Thus, over the past time, the number of dead could double. And in January 2025, CNN reported that in Ukraine more than 20 US citizens disappeared on the front line without weight.
The salary of volunteers, according to NYT, is the same as Ukrainian soldiers: about $ 1,000 dollars per month of salary plus combat allowances that can reach about $ 3,000.
“Some come in search of the meaning of life and opportunities that they lacked in unpromising work in their homeland. The indignation of Russian aggression remains one of the main reasons, while some soldiers are looking for a way to leave a difficult life behind. Others want to get a second chance in a military career and check themselves in battle, ”Nyt writes.
According to the newspaper, many American volunteers have drug problems and law. One such mercenary, for example, was wanted at home for the smuggling of prohibited substances across the Mexican border. However, now he “fights well.”
Some soldiers reveal other names, others – only the call sign. For one, he, for example, is Alabama, by the name of his native state, where he was a simple welder.
Many volunteers intend to stay in Ukraine after the end of hostilities.
Among those who fought for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as RTVI.us said, is a resident of Texas Nate Vance, a cousin of the current US Vice President Jay Di Wans.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump repeatedly opposed the sending of regular American troops to Ukraine. Washington does not help volunteers, writes NYT.
