Austin Butler Takes on Patrick Bateman: Luca Guadagnino Reimagines "American Psycho"

Fans of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial novel "American Psycho" are in for a thrilling ride. Lionsgate has announced a new adaptation of the 1991 bestseller, this time helmed by acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino ("Bones and All," "Suspiria"). Adding fuel to the fire, Austin Butler ("Dune: Part Two") is set to step into the infamous shoes of Patrick Bateman, the wealthy investment banker with a sinister secret.

A Fresh Take on a Classic Story

This isn’t a remake of the 2000 cult classic starring Christian Bale, but a brand new interpretation penned by screenwriter Scott Z. Burns ("Extrapolations").

The story follows Patrick Bateman, a seemingly ordinary Wall Street executive who hides his gruesome psychopathic tendencies beneath a veneer of wealth and sophistication. While the core narrative remains, audiences can expect Guadagnino and Butler to bring their own unique vision to the character, potentially offering a chillingly different portrayal compared to Bale’s unforgettable performance.

Behind the Scenes

Production will be handled by Frenesy Films, with executive producer Sam Pressman, son of the producer of the 2000 adaptation, involved. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson expressed excitement about Guadagnino’s talent, stating, "Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP."

The Future of "American Psycho"

With Butler confirmed in the lead role, the project is gaining momentum. Fans eagerly anticipate further details about the film’s release date, cast, and the creative direction Guadagnino will take.
