Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Islamist rebel group leading the charge against Assad, confirmed Timmerman’s release. He was reportedly treated well in detention, but endured confinement in a single cell, limited bathroom access, and witnessed the torture of others.
Mouaz Mostafa, executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, played a role in Timmerman’s safe passage. After meeting Timmerman, Mostafa arranged transport to Damascus, where authorities provided him with food, water, clothes, and shoes. Timmerman had walked 13 miles barefoot before being found.
