Should Amazon Dive into Bitcoin? Shareholders Say Yes!
Amazon’s shareholders are urging the company to follow the footsteps of MicroStrategy and diversify its massive reserves into Bitcoin, arguing it’s a smart move to combat inflation and boost shareholder value.
A Case for Bitcoin Investment
A proposal from the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR) suggests Amazon allocate as little as 5% of its assets into Bitcoin. While acknowledging the cryptocurrency’s volatility, the proposal emphasizes that corporations have a responsibility to prioritize long-term shareholder value.
"Corporations have a responsibility to maximize shareholder value over the long-term as well as the short-term. Diversifying the balance sheet by including some bitcoin solves this problem without taking on too much volatility," according to the shareholder proposal.
Bitcoin’s impressive performance this year, surging 134% and exceeding $100,000, highlights its potential. Notably, MicroStrategy, a leading Bitcoin advocate, has seen its share price skyrocket over 500% compared to Amazon’s 49% gain.
Amazon’s Current Asset Mix: Falling Short?
The NCPPR argues that Amazon’s current asset mix, heavily reliant on cash, cash equivalents, and bonds, isn’t sufficient to protect shareholder value effectively. Bitcoin, they propose, could offer a valuable hedge against inflation and outperform traditional investments.
A Growing Trend:
Amazon isn’t alone in facing calls to consider Bitcoin. Similar proposals were recently submitted to Microsoft shareholders, urging them to assess Bitcoin’s potential as a diversification strategy.
Is Bitcoin the Future?
While Bitcoin’s volatility remains a concern, its potential as a store of value and inflation hedge is increasingly recognized. Amazon, with its vast resources, could significantly impact the crypto market if it decides to allocate a portion of its assets to Bitcoin.
