It is an adventure that should never have seen the light of day. In 2022, while Alt Shift advanced on Lost Fortress – a Metroidvania Fantasy which they then present to several publishers -, an unexpected proposal arose. “At the end of our presentation, Cyrille Imbert (Dotemu leader, editor’s note) tells us:” I am not particularly interested in the game you showed me, but on the other hand the last line on Crying Suns Intrigue myself, because I may have an opportunity for you, ”says Frédéric Lopez, general manager and co-founder of the Montpellier studio.
Fan of their previous title Crying SunsImbert then opens an unsuspected door. A prototype and a presentation at Universal later, All shift won the rights to develop what will become Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopesannounced during the Gamescom 2025 late August. A new game directly inspired by the emblematic series Eponymous: Battlestar Galactica.

Famous science fiction television series of the 2000s, Battlestar Galactica is one of those emblematic works that we no longer present. Four seasons and 73 episodes later, she permanently marked the genre. History begins with the devastating attack on cylons – machines created by humanity – which destroy almost all human civilization. The rare survivors run away aboard a fleet of civilian vessels, protected by the latest war battleship still intact: the Battlestar Galactica. Guided by Commander Adama and President Roslin, the survivors wander in space in search of a mythical refuge: the legendary thirteenth colony, the earth.
A waking dream
“It is the dream of a small independent studio to have access to a license that we do not dare to imagine accessible.” Himself a very fan of the series-just like the rest of the team-Frédéric Lopez still can’t believe it: “Crying Sunsour last game, is very inspired by Battlestar Galactica. For us, it’s a bit of the dream project. It was hard to imagine that a small Montpellier studio not the same ten people could have access to that. ”
For three years, Alt Shift has grown well: a fifteen people Actively work on this new project. “For us, it is also a recognition to entrust us with this kind of license, since that means that we are trusted as a studio.” And beyond the personal adventure, it is also a collective pride: “being able to put Montpellier on the international map, show that there are video games that are created here, in a city where more and more success emerge like Stray or Expedition 33, it is something that matters a lot for me too”, admits Frédéric Lopez, smiling.
To new horizons
Because if Dotemu proposed this project to them, it is not by chance. In continuity of their previous success (Crying Sunsa spatial Rogue-Lite sold in nearly two million copies), Alt Shift offers a recipe that they know well: a narrative and tactical spatial literature of a twenty hours in the universe of Battlestar Galactica. A game that they were also able to conceive with rare creative freedom for a license of this magnitude. “By respecting the constraints of the series, we were able to offer a lot of new things, such as new vessel models or certain aspects of narration,” he explains. The objective: to offer an original and more daring look on the saga. “It will stand out because it’s a license game, but with a look at a small independent studio,” says Lopez.

Here, the player embodies the commander of a civil fleet distinct from that of the galactica, also hunted down by the cylons. His goal: to join the legendary battleship, the last hope of humanity. For this, it will be necessary to manage limited resources, an unpredictable crew and desperate fights – always followed by an inevitable leak, because in front of the cylons, the survival holds only a thread. The whole, crowned by an adventure rich in stories in the licked artistic direction, in order to plunge the player into the heart of the universe of Battlestar Galactica.

“The best tribute to the series”
With fans of the saga in control, the tone is set: Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes is also a tribute. “For me, and I think it’s a shared opinion in the team, it’s probably the best spatial science fiction series. There is really a lot of depth, and we tried to transcribe this best in the game.” There is no question of being limited to a simple space opera made of space battles: “We really made the game which seems to us to be the best tribute to the series, with all the complexity and the depth of its characters.”
Particular care has also been carried to detail, with several winks slipped here and there – enough to seduce fans of the first hour, who will take pleasure in carrying out their own investigation into the infiltrated cylon in the crew. And the first returns are encouraging: “We have almost 450,000 views on the trailer of IGN, there is really an expectation and an interest.” But the game is not only for initiates. Thanks to its history, it remains accessible to a wider audience: “We have the same beginnings as the series, but, the rest … No one knows it.” A choice which allows us to respect the series without ever altering it – and which opens the door to a brand new crew of players, whether they are already won over by the universe or whether they discover it for the first time.
Expected for the First quarter 2026 On PC and Mac, Battlestar Galactica: Scattered Hopes is not only an opportunity for fans and new players to discover (or rediscover) this universe. It is also an open door to new horizons for this small Montpellier studio, which plays, for the first time, in the big courtyard.
