Allergy-Proof Decorating: What to Know

by Archynetys Health Desk

(WKBN)- Can you be allergic to your Christmas tree?

While a pine allergy is pretty uncommon, allergies could be flaring up for other reasons.

Artificial Christmas trees and decorations sit in storage all year, building up dust and mold. Real trees carry in pollen, mold and other allergens.

Allergists recommend wiping down and dusting off everything before decorating for the season.

They also say that when taking decorations down, put them in airtight containers. When it comes to real trees, be mindful of how long they are kept up.

“The longer you keep it in the home, the longer the mold has to grow and release more spores. So, I tend to recommend that once the season’s over, get rid of your tree somewhat immediately, not necessarily wait till January because you’re just letting mold fester,” said Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Devon Preston.

For those dealing with allergies, Dr.Preston says that cozying up to the fireplace or burning festive candles can add to the irritation. He recommends removing anything that aggravates your allergies and seeing an allergist if symptoms persist.
