Florida, known for its eccentricities, is once again showcasing its unusual side. This time, it’s not a “Florida Man” story, but a marine mystery unfolding on the Space Coast, near Cocoa Beach. Instead of the expected five-armed sea stars, beachgoers are encountering bizarre nine-armed sea stars.

One beachgoer recounted her surprise, saying, “I was definitely a little shocked. I’ve seen five-armed sea stars before, but I’ve never seen anything like this. He was large. I’ve never seen a sea star this large. A lot of people were commenting [on her photo of the creature]saying they’ve seen similar sea stars.I just wanted to make sure I could protect him, and make sure I could get him back in the water, so he could continue living on.”

The reason for this sudden appearance of multi-armed sea stars remains unclear to scientists.

A Philosophical Encounter

Photographer Michael Stephen Wills, who also spotted one of these unique creatures, shared a thoughtful reflection: “Cocoa Beach, with its gentle waves and abundant life, had once again provided an unforgettable encounter with nature.The starfish, now safely returned to the ocean, would continue its unseen work beneath the waves, a quiet but essential denizen of the underwater world.”

if you happen to find one of these nine-armed sea stars, experts advise gently scooping it up with some sand and returning it to the ocean. While five arms are typical, some species can have up to 40 arms.
