Algeria: Insulting President Tebboune – 2-Year Prison Sentence

An activist opposed to the Algerian regime, Fethi Ghares is being prosecuted for “spreading false information likely to undermine public order and security”.

The Algerian opponent, Fethi Ghares, an important figure of the secular left in Algeria, was sentenced on Tuesday, October 21, to two years in prison, for “insulting the President of the Republic”.

Mr. Ghares, who must pay a fine of 300,000 dinars, was sentenced by the Hussein-Dey court to “two years in prison, due to statements concerning the President of the Republic, said Mr. Badi, the Algerian opponent’s lawyer. The latter announced an appeal.

Fethi Ghares was prosecuted for “insulting a body” and “spreading false information likely to undermine public order and security”.

Banning his party

In a video posted on social networks, Mr. Ghares explained that he was accused of having criticized President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a meeting with the press, where he announced a review of the electoral law and parties.

The opponent was also arrested in 2024, before the presidential election of September 7, for “insulting President Tebboune”.

Fethi Ghares’ party, the Democratic and Social Movement, very active during the popular Hirak protests, was banned in February 2023.
