The Alger County Animal Shelter is nearing the completion of its new facility, ensuring the safety and well-being of animals during the transition. Shelter President Greg Beatty emphasizes their core principle: “One hundred percent no kill, no time limit. We keep them here as long as it takes to adopt them out.”

according to Beatty, the new location is progressing smoothly, with only the septic tank installation remaining. The community’s involvement has been instrumental in the building process, with numerous volunteers contributing their time and effort.

“We still got a little bit of work to do. We got a work bee coming up on Thursday, people from Embers Credit Union, there’s going to be five of them here,” Beatty said. “They’re going to help us probably put up some fencing, clean the yard, rake.”

Earlier in the year, in January, the shelter faced a critical shortage of caregivers for the dogs during the relocation. Currently, all dogs from the shelter are being cared for.

Currently, three dogs are in foster care, while Eramis remains at the shelter. Beatty assures that the new shelter will maintain the same level of care for all animals. “it’s about the same,” said Beatty. “I mean we’re not going to change anything we’re just going to get the animals in, people who surrender them or strays, and we take them to the vet and get them socialized and then we adopt them out.”

The shelter is appealing to the public for financial assistance,estimating a need of $30,000 to $60,000 to finalize the construction. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 532, Munising, MI 49862. those interested in volunteering can call (906) 387-4131.
