Alex Caruso Secures Four-Year, $81 Million Extension with Thunder
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Alex Caruso, a two-time NBA All-Defensive Team selection, has locked down a significant contract extension. His agent, Greg Lawrence of Wasserman, confirmed to ESPN on Sunday that Caruso has signed a four-year, $81 million deal with the Thunder. This extension keeps the veteran guard, who is currently earning $9.9 million per year, under contract through the 2028-29 season.
The Thunder announced the signing but did not disclose the financial details of the deal. Caruso became eligible for an extension on Saturday, making this move a strategic retention of a key player by the team.
Caruso’s Journey to Thunder
At 30 years old, Caruso arrived at the Thunder during the offseason as a sought-after wing player. He brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent four seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, including a part of the 2020 NBA championship team. Prior to signing with the Thunder, Caruso played for the Chicago Bulls for three years, where he achieved a career-high average of 10.1 points per game during the 2023-24 season.
Building a Defensive Fortress
Currently, the Thunder lead the Western Conference with a 22-5 record, and Caruso is a critical component of their formidable defense. Partnering with Lu Dort and Cason Wallace, Caruso provides second-tier wing defense around superstar players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams. Their combined effort has made the Thunder one of the best defensive teams in the NBA.
Caruso’s Defensive Impact
Caruso excels on the defensive end, ranking second in the NBA this season in field goal percentage allowed as a contesting defender among players who have contested at least 150 shots. He also ranks second in points per direct pick allowed on ballhandling defense among players who have defended at least 115 on-ball screens, according to Second Spectrum.
Defensively, Caruso averages 1.9 steals per game, joining ESPN Research’s top five deflections per game list among players who have appeared in 15 or more games. His versatility and defensive prowess have been invaluable to the Thunder.
Offensive Contributions
Beyond his defensive skills, Caruso contributes offensively as well. This season, he averages 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Caruso’s ability to step up and score when needed complements the Thunder’s star-studded lineup.
From Undrafted to All-Star Defender
Caruso’s journey to becoming an All-Star defender is nothing short of remarkable. He was overlooked in the 2016 NBA draft but found a home with the Thunder’s training camp. He later played for the franchise’s G League affiliate, the OKC Blue, in 2016-17. His progression from that point to securing such a lucrative deal with a top team highlights his resilience and skill.
Thunder’s Future in the Western Conference
The Thunder’s strategic retention of Caruso signals their intention to compete at the highest level of the NBA. With a strong defense and a growing offense, the Thunder position themselves as serious contenders for the Western Conference championship and beyond.
As the Thunder maintain their strong start to the season, Caruso’s long-term commitment will undoubtedly be a cornerstone in their pursuit of NBA greatness.
