A potential merger between Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord is making waves in the retail sector. Negotiations between the owners reportedly began recently, following German press disclosures, conducted with remarkable secrecy. If the families behind the two companies agree, the unification of Aldi promises significant advantages and a stronger competitive stance against rivals like Lidl.

The History Behind the aldi Divide

The roots of aldi extend back over a century, gaining prominence after World War II. Brothers Karl Albrecht and Theo albrecht took over their mother’s store upon returning from Russia. Despite the challenges of post-war scarcity, they successfully managed and expanded the business, opening numerous new stores.

The Aldi we know today was officially established in 1961, its name derived from “Albrecht Diskont.”

Though, Aldi has practically split simultaneously occurring as it is indeed said to have not yet confirmed this legend-as Karl and Theo, among other things, could not agree on selling cigarettes in stores.

In the early 1960s, a split occurred, creating Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord. Each entity developed its own regional focus, business strategies, and international operations. (The Hungarian market, for example, falls under Aldi Süd’s purview.) By 1966, the two companies were entirely independent, both financially and legally. They have since become major forces in the European retail market, expanding to other continents. Upon their retirement in 2006, the brothers were among the wealthiest individuals globally.

Following the deaths of Karl and Theo Albrecht, legal disputes arose, culminating in the reorganization of Aldi Nord’s control in 2023. However,a merger between aldi Süd and Aldi Nord was not under consideration at that time.
