Alcohol-Free Wine Test: First Look & Reviews

According to the broadcast, only eight out of 25 products were evaluated with “good”, criticisms were unclear labels and expandable taste. According to the international organization for vine and wine (OIV), global wine production in 2024 has decreased by almost five percent – even by 8.8 percent in Austria.

The reasons are climatic factors and new consumption habits. According to the VKI nutritional scientist Nina Eichberger, the trend towards non-alcoholic wine is gratifying, but there are still room for improvement in many products tested.

Most ratings “average”

Layer and wine experts have tested non -alcoholic red wines, rosé, white wines and a pearl wine. In addition to the eight products classified as “well”, 14 as “average” and three were rated as “less satisfactory”.

The expert tasting resulted in a worse result: only one wine got the grade “good”, while 14 products were classified as “average”, eight as “less satisfactory” and two as “unsatisfactory”. Both groups at the taste winner, Oleada Fizzy-Blanc, agreed to the only pearl wine in the test.

Signations often misleading

Despite technical progress, aromas are lost in the production of non -alcoholic wine, which are compensated for by additives such as wine -owned flavors, grape juice or carbon dioxide. In terms of taste, according to Eichberger, many of the products are more reminiscent of grape juice than wine. Terms such as Rosé, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay or Sangiovese can also contribute to confusion and have deception potential for consumers.

Sometimes the tested products also contained additives such as typical wine -typical aroma substances, fruit juice or herbal excerpts, which, according to the wine law, would not be allowed in non -alcoholic wine. “A clear and transparent labeling on the front and comprehensive product information directly on the label would therefore be desirable.”

Also positive sides

The positive sides of the non -alcoholic wines are the non -existent alcohol and its lower calorie content. In the test, this was an average of around 22 calories per 125 milliliters under conventional wine. Mikrobiologically, all products were okay.
