Veteran Ishikawa Achieves Milestone Victory

In a remarkable display of longevity and skill, Yakult Swallows’ veteran left-handed pitcher, Ishikawa Masaki, secured his first win of the 2025 season against the Hanshin Tigers on April 9th. This victory is especially critically important as it marks Ishikawa’s 24th consecutive year with a win as his debut in 2002, setting a new professional baseball record. Ishikawa, who joined the team after being drafted from Seigaku University following his graduation from Akita Commercial High School, continues to defy expectations at the age of 45.

A Deep Dive into Baseball’s Statistical Anomalies

Beyond the headlines, Ishikawa’s achievement highlights the fascinating world of baseball statistics. As Abe Yamato, a professional baseball record keeper notes, the sport, which began in 1936, has seen over 66,559 games played through last year.Yet, Ishikawa’s feat is unprecedented, showcasing the rarity of such sustained success. Yamato has dedicated a quarter of a century to analyzing baseball records, searching for the hidden stories within the numbers.

it may take some time to research, but I would like to continue to look for records that will make people think, “Oh no!”

Akita High School Duo Recreate History

The game against Hanshin also featured another notable achievement. ishiyama Yasuyoshi, also hailing from Akita, earned a save in the same game Ishikawa secured his win. This marked the first time in five years that the two players had achieved a win and save in the same game as October 21st, 2020, against the Giants. This is only the seventh time this has happened, including the match against Hanshin on the 4th of this month. Before them, the only other instance of an Akita high school duo achieving this feat was back on April 27th, 1989, when Kintetsu’s Murata Tatsumi (Rokugo High School) and Sato Hideaki (Akita Municipal High School) accomplished it against Daiei.

rookie’s First Loss adds to the Narrative

Adding another layer to this compelling narrative, Hanshin rookie Kudo Yasunari suffered his first professional loss in the same game were Ishikawa celebrated his 187th win and Ishiyama recorded his 93rd save. The 23-year-old Kudo, born on November 19, 2001, the year Ishikawa was drafted, also graduated from an Akita high school (Myoza high School). This convergence of players from akita high schools – the winning pitcher, the saving pitcher, and the losing pitcher – made April 9th a truly unique day in professional baseball history.

The ongoing Quest for Baseball’s Unsung Records

Ishikawa’s remarkable achievement serves as a reminder that professional baseball is full of hidden records waiting to be discovered. While some milestones receive widespread attention, many others remain buried within the vast archives of the sport.
