Aishah Akorede: Openly Discussing Sickle Cell Disease on Dancing with the Stars

In a brave and impactful move, Dancing with the Stars contestant Aishah Akorede has opened up about living with sickle cell disease, revealing it was “the most terrifying thing ever” to discuss such a personal and challenging topic on national television.

Aishah Akorede’s Emotional Journey on Dancing with the Stars

During the recent episode, Aishah Akorede, a 25-year-old model and former Miss Universe Ireland, showcased her dance skills alongside her professional partner, Robert Rowiński. They performed an African-inspired Samba that paid homage to her mother, Kemi—a stunning performance that earned them 31 points from the judges.

The Importance of Sharing Her Story

Akorede revealed she doesn’t typically share her condition with others due to concerns of being perceived solely through her illness. However, she aims to change this perception by sharing her experience. In an interview with the press, she stated, “It’s not something I speak about. I don’t want people to look at me as my illness. I want people to look at me as Aishah, who has accomplished certain things and supported others.”

A Unique Experience with Sickle Cell Disease

Akorede’s unique situation sets her apart from other individuals with sickle cell disease. She explained, “I have a high haemoglobin F, which is usually common in individuals from the Middle East. Being African, it’s quite rare for me.” This genetic peculiarity has allowed her to lead a relatively more comfortable life, but she still faces occasional challenges. She noted, “I do experience painful episodes and sometimes struggle with breathing. My immune system also requires extra vigilance, as it can react differently to illnesses.”

Motivation for Advocacy

Akorede feels a sense of responsibility to share her story, advocating for those who face more severe consequences of sickle cell disease. “I know people who have passed away or require bone marrow surgery due to the severity of their condition,” she said. Her hope is to inspire and educate others through her openness about living with sickle cell disease.

The Influence of Her Mother

Motherly support is a crucial factor in Akorede’s life. She praised her mother, Kemi, as a scientist who provides meticulous care. “My mum checks to make sure I’ve eaten and prepares juices for me to maintain my health,” she explained. This unwavering support has been pivotal in Akorede’s journey, as highlighted by her statement, “I’m really grateful for my mum. She is a queen. She’s an icon.”

Growing Confidence on the Show

The dancing competition has provided Akorede not only with a platform for artistic expression but also with an opportunity to build self-confidence. She reflected on her personal growth, stating, “I feel a lot more in tune with my body. I do have insecurities, but I’m becoming more confident in myself, mentally, and physically.” The recognition of her evolving self-esteem and physical strength underscore the holistic impact of the show.

Largest Scores and Upcoming Elimination

Despite her impressive performance, no contestants were eliminated in the latest episode. Jack Woolley, paired with pro partner Alex Vladimirov, topped the leaderboard this week, securing his status for the following episode’s competition. This arrangement is part of the show’s format designed to keep the competition exciting.
