Air India is under intense scrutiny following a scathing warning from India‘s aviation regulator,the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The DGCA cited “systemic failures” and has mandated the removal of three executives from their positions. This action follows “repeated and serious violations” related to pilot duty scheduling, separate from the crash that killed all but one of the 242 people onboard earlier this month.

The DGCA has instructed Air india to dismiss a divisional vice president, a chief manager of crew scheduling, and a planning executive due to “lapses” connected to flights operating between Bengaluru and London on May 16 and May 17, according to government directives obtained by Reuters.

These incidents involved pilots exceeding their maximum 10-hour flight duty limit, constituting a breach of safety regulations. The DGCA’s order, issued amidst heightened scrutiny after the fatal crash on June 12, revealed “systemic failures in scheduling protocol and oversights,” along with inadequate disciplinary measures for those responsible.

Earlier in the week, Air India also received a warning after three of its Airbus aircraft were cleared for takeoff despite overdue checks on emergency escape slides.

In response to the DGCA’s directive, an Air India spokesperson stated that the order has been implemented and affirmed the airline’s dedication to “ensuring that there is total adherence to safety protocols and standard practices”.

The DGCA noted that Air India had voluntarily disclosed details regarding the violations.

The Tata Group-owned airline was undergoing a brand change, aiming to address long-standing complaints about delays and subpar service, when a London-bound aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad on June 12. The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 people onboard, including 52 British nationals, and at least 29 individuals on the ground.

The incident is considered one of the deadliest plane accidents in recent history, with only one survivor, Vishwash kumar Ramesh, who was traveling with his brother.

the cause of the crash remains under inquiry, with experts from India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, along with US and UK authorities, working to determine the events that transpired in the moments after the Boeing 787 dreamliner became airborne.

Following the incident, the airline has cancelled, diverted, or delayed numerous flights after the DGCA mandated additional safety inspections on its Boeing 787 fleet as a “preventative measure”.

Air India has also announced a temporary reduction in flights on 16 international routes and the suspension of services to three overseas destinations until July 15.
