AI Singer Billboard: Can You Tell the Difference?

[서울=뉴시스]Intern Reporter Kim Geon-min = A song created by artificial intelligence (AI) has become a hot topic by taking first place on the U.S. Billboard chart.

According to foreign media outlets such as USA Today on the 13th (local time), the AI-generated song ‘Walk My Walk’ by singer ‘Breaking Rust’ ranked first on the US Billboard Country Digital Song Sales chart.

The chart is ranked based on the most downloaded music sources in the United States. As of today, Walk My Work continues to be a box office hit, having been played more than 3.5 million times on the music streaming service Spotify.

In addition, Breaking Rust’s other popular songs, ‘Livin’ on Borrowed Time’, have been played 4 million times, and ‘Whiskey Don’t Talk Back’ has been played 1 million times.

This is not the first time AI music has entered the charts. Last September, AI R&B singer Jania Monet’s ‘Let Go, Let Go’ ranked 3rd on the gospel chart, and ‘How Was I Supposed To Know’ ranked 20th on the Billboard chart.

Regarding this ‘AI music craze,’ the British media Guardian cited research by streaming service Deezer and said, “The reason AI music dominates the charts is because of its explosive production.” According to the study, 50,000 songs, or about 34% of the music uploaded daily to global music platforms, were AI-generated music.

As sound quality has improved significantly, there are increasing cases where ordinary listeners are unable to distinguish between AI music and music by human composers. In the same study, Deezer surveyed 9,000 people in eight countries and found that approximately 97% of respondents could not distinguish between music created by AI and music composed by humans.

As the influence of AI singers grows, the music industry is raising concerns about copyright infringement and threats to the livelihood of human creators.

In particular, in the UK last February, more than 1,000 artists, including Annie Lennox, Damon Albarn, and Radiohead, protested against the government’s AI deregulation policy and released a silent album titled ‘Is This What We Want?’, which became a hot topic.
