Government Backs AI in Manufacturing with new Funding Initiative
South Korea is doubling down on its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) in manufacturing, aiming to boost productivity and address potential worker shortages. The government is actively promoting the integration of AI into various industrial sectors through strategic funding and collaborative initiatives [2], [3].
The AI Autonomous Manufacturing alliance
Leading Korean manufacturing giants have joined forces to create the “AI Autonomous Manufacturing Alliance.” This collaborative effort, supported by the Ministry of Trade,Industry, and Energy, signifies a unified push towards AI-driven autonomous manufacturing. A Memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by participating companies and institutions to accelerate the advancement of AI in this sector [2].
New Project to Develop AI-Embedded Software
The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy has unveiled new projects under the ‘electronic component industry development (main industry convergence) project,’ focusing on the technological advancement of ‘high-tech manufacturing artificial intelligence (AI) embedded software’. This initiative aims to integrate AI directly into manufacturing processes through specialized software solutions.
Embedded software, integral to the operation of machines and equipment, is a key area of focus. Since 2009,the electronic component industry technology development project has been adapting to evolving industrial paradigms, including the internet of Things (IoT),AI,and the increasing convergence of facts and communication technology (ICT) in manufacturing environments. These efforts have already demonstrated improvements in quality and cost reduction through advanced detection and monitoring technologies.
Focus on AI Manufacturing Systems and Software
The newly announced projects will prioritize the development of AI manufacturing system technology applicable across various industries. Specific attention will be given to AI manufacturing technology for semiconductor and secondary battery production, as well as the creation of AI software designed to enhance efficiency and reliability within limited computing environments.
Financial Support and Application Details
The government will provide significant financial backing, allocating a total of 3 billion won per project over 33 months. This year alone, 8.25 billion won has been earmarked for these initiatives. The application period extends for one month, concluding on May 7th, and applications can be submitted through the integrated research support system.
south Korea’s Broader AI Investment Strategy
This initiative is part of a larger national strategy. President Yoon Suk Yeol announced a significant investment of 9.4 trillion won ($6.94 billion) in artificial intelligence by 2027. This substantial financial commitment underscores South korea’s determination to maintain its position as a global leader in AI technology and related industries [1].
