styria’s Design Month: A Legacy of Innovation and a Glimpse into the future
Exploring the impact of Design Month on Styria’s creative industries and its future trajectory.
A Decade of Design: Celebrating Styria’s Creative Prowess
As Eberhard Schrempf, the long-standing managing director of Creative Industries Styria (CIS), prepares for his final Design Month, it’s a moment to reflect on the event’s profound impact. Born from a vision in 2009 to establish Graz as a UNESCO City of design, a title it proudly earned in 2011, Design Month has become a cornerstone of Styria’s creative identity.
Schrempf, who will step down from his role at CIS in the autumn, has successfully cultivated a brand that has opened “enormous opportunities in internationalization” for Styrian businesses. His leadership has been instrumental in positioning Styria as a hub for design and innovation.
Economic Engine: The Power of Styrian Creative industries
Willibald Ehrenhöfer (ÖVP), Styria’s economic state councilor, highlights the significant contribution of the region’s creative sector. With approximately 8,900 companies, the Styrian creative industries generate an extraordinary €2.6 billion annually. The software and gaming industry leads the way, demonstrating the region’s strength in cutting-edge digital innovation.
This economic vitality underscores the importance of continued investment and support for the creative industries. According to a recent report by the austrian Federal Economic chamber, the creative industries contribute significantly to Austria’s overall GDP, fostering job creation and driving innovation across various sectors.
“The New Real“: Exploring Authenticity in the Age of AI
The heart of this year’s design Month, running from May 9th to June 1st, is the main exhibition, The New Real-Between Truth and Deception
. located on the former Hornig coffee roasting site near Smart City, this exhibition features 50 AI-generated video installations by international artists. These thought-provoking works delve into the complex questions surrounding authenticity and the reliability of information in an increasingly digital world.
Visitors can expect a highly interactive experience, with numerous exhibitions, workshops, and installations offering opportunities for engagement and exploration. Admission to the entire Design Month is free, making it accessible to a wide audience.
Interactive Experiences and Regional Reach
Beyond the main exhibition,Design Month offers a diverse range of interactive experiences. These include a poster and t-shirt printing workshop (“Rebel Prints”), an idea workshop focused on repurposing vacant spaces, and even a “rage room” where participants can creatively dismantle unwanted design objects.
Recognizing the breadth of Styrian creative talent,Design Month extends beyond Graz with satellite events in Pöllau,Trahütten,Kirchberg an der Raab, and Hollenegg Castle. This regional approach ensures that the entire Styrian creative landscape is represented and celebrated.
Looking Ahead: Creativity’s Place in the Future
The Hornig area, which is hosting Design Month for the second consecutive year, is slated to be transformed into a business center by its owner, the Austrian housing cooperative (ÖWG).Schrempf has indicated that efforts are underway to ensure that creativity continues to have a prominent place in the future development of the site.
The commitment to integrating creative spaces within new developments reflects a growing recognition of the importance of fostering innovation and collaboration. As cities around the world grapple with issues of urban development and economic growth, Styria’s approach offers a compelling model for integrating the creative industries into the fabric of urban life.
