Egypt has introduced a fully integrated system leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for the early detection of breast cancer in the Middle East. The initiative was inaugurated at the Bheaya hospital in Sheikh Zayed by the Minister of Communications and Details Technology, Dr. Amr Talaat, in partnership with the Center for Applied Innovation of the Ministry and the Bheaya Foundation.

The AI-driven system is designed to analyse mammography images and provide preliminary diagnoses with high precision, aiming to improve the efficiency of routine examinations, reduce treatment costs, and increase recovery rates. Developed by Egyptian engineers and data scientists, the system has achieved an accuracy rate of approximately 90 percent and has been implemented in Bheaya hospitals in Haram and Sheikh Zayed.

AI System Improves Breast Cancer Detection

“A milestone to take advantage of artificial intelligence to serve medical care” – Dr. Amr Talaat

During the launch, Dr. Talaat hailed the initiative as “a milestone to take advantage of artificial intelligence to serve medical care,” emphasizing its importance in protecting womenS health. He noted that the project marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration between the Applied Innovation Center and the Bheaya Hospital, with the potential to expand its reach and benefit more women in Egypt.

The system’s advancement involved a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, oncologists, data scientists, and software engineers. It incorporates a complete Egyptian database of over 60,000 mammography images, categorized by type, location, density, and diagnostic confidence. The system can identify and classify abnormal growths as either benign or malignant, with continuous improvements based on medical feedback.

Ing. Tamer Shawky, president of the Board of Trustees of the Bheaya Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that the project “will facilitate early detection and help to safeguard the health of thousands of women throughout the country.” He also conveyed his pride in Baheya being selected as the pioneering institution for implementing this advanced technology.

Dr. Ahmed Tanowy, supervisor of the applied innovation center, highlighted that the AI engine was developed locally and trained using high-quality Egyptian medical data, making it more accurate and relevant compared to foreign alternatives. He also confirmed the system’s seamless integration into Baheya’s technical infrastructure for optimal daily operations.

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has reaffirmed its dedication to advancing AI-driven health solutions as part of Egypt’s broader digital conversion strategy, with plans to further refine and expand the system in the coming years.
