The Augustinian Perspective on the New Pope

Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Francis Prevost, the Augustinian Order, to which he belongs, has offered insights into what the world can expect from his papacy.Fray José Ignacio Busta, Prior Provincial of the Augustinians in Chile, shared his views, emphasizing the new Pope’s commitment to dialog and peace.

Busta, who met Leo XIV during a visit to Chile in 2002 and later in Rome, describes him as more reserved than his predecessor,Pope Francis, but equally dedicated to social justice and addressing global issues. This difference in style doesn’t equate to a lack of conviction, according to Busta.

He does not have the exuberance that Pope Francis had… When something has to say it says it and says it firmly.

A Pontificate of Peace in a Turbulent World

Given the current geopolitical climate, the Augustinian Order anticipates that Leo XIV’s papacy will prioritize peace. Busta draws a parallel to the challenges faced by Pope Leo XIII, highlighting the rise of nationalism, international disagreements, and the ongoing migration crisis. These issues demand a strong, diplomatic voice on the world stage.

The world is currently facing numerous conflicts and humanitarian crises. According to the Council on Foreign Relations’ Global Conflict Tracker, there are several ongoing conflicts with critically important humanitarian consequences, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic solutions and peace initiatives.

We have to wait a pontificate of peace… the first sensation we have when we hear international news is that there are rumors of war, there is disagreement, the dialogue does not prevail, nationalisms are too exacerbated and the issue of migration has not yet been treated in an adequate way.

Migration and International Policy: A personal Connection

Pope Leo XIV’s American-Peruvian heritage and multicultural family background are seen as significant assets in addressing migration and shaping international policies. His personal connection to cultural diversity and his experience in the missionary world provide him with a unique perspective.

Busta believes this background will empower the Pope to speak out against unjust policies and advocate for the rights of migrants and marginalized communities. His approach is expected to be diplomatic and well-considered, ensuring his message resonates effectively on the international stage.

The United Nations reports that international migration continues to be a complex and pressing issue, with millions of people displaced due to conflict, persecution, and environmental factors. This highlights the importance of Pope Leo XIV’s potential influence on migration policies.

Pope Leo XIV is going to raise his voice when he realizes that there are undue policies, realities concerning the international that are not right. He is not going to be silent… He will know how to say it with diplomacy and in an appropriate way on the right stage and will be deeply appreciated.
