Tragedy in Chihuahua: Another Death Raises Concerns About Cosmetic Surgery Safety

A Husband’s Grief: Woman Dies After Routine Cosmetic Procedures

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Mayra Guadalupe Urías Sigala, a 40-year-old woman from Midland, Texas, passed away on March 19th following what was intended to be a series of minor cosmetic procedures in Chihuahua, Mexico. Her husband, José Calderón, recounts the devastating moment he learned of his wife’s death after being told the procedures would take approximately five hours.

They did not warn us that there were complications. We arrived, and she had already died. Her body was cold.

According to Calderón, Mayra, a gym instructor, was in good health and sought only minor aesthetic enhancements, including breast implant correction, jawline contouring, and minimal fat removal from her waist. The couple chose the Diet center clinic based on a suggestion and were attended to by Dr. Jorge Luis Muñoz Zúñiga. Despite the family’s distress, the doctor reportedly only returned the $10,000 payment after Mayra’s death.

Recurring Concerns: History of Complications at the Clinic

This tragic incident is not an isolated case. Disturbingly, this is not the first time a patient of Dr. Muñoz has died following cosmetic surgery. In July 2022, Jessica Alejandra Ramírez Sánchez underwent a procedure performed by Dr. Muñoz at the same clinic. She was later admitted to Palmore Hospital and died on August 3rd due to septic shock and a soft tissue infection.

In the Ramírez Sánchez case, legal action was pursued, with the patient’s husband filing an amparo (legal protection) numbered 1352/2023 to compel the clinic to release medical records. The amparo was granted on november 27th,marking a significant legal victory. however, despite the court order, no conviction has been secured against the doctor to date.

Legal and Regulatory Scrutiny: A Pattern of Deaths in Chihuahua’s Cosmetic Surgery Industry

The State Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COESPRIS) reports that they have no formal complaints on file against the Diet Center clinic or Dr. Muñoz. Though, the central District Prosecutor’s Office reports a concerning trend, having opened six investigation folders in 2024 alone related to patient deaths following surgical interventions, three of which were plastic surgeries.

Other notable cases include:

  • Dora Isela ch. L.: Died after complications from plastic surgery performed by Dr. Jonathan Ledezma at the Columbus Medical Center in June.
  • Gabriela Jacobo Acosta: Passed away from hypovolemic shock after undergoing abdominoplasty, lipotransference, and breast augmentation at the Saint Jhonn Clinic in august.
  • Cecilia Chacón Mireles: Died at home after undergoing eight simultaneous surgeries at the Saint Jhonn Clinic in March 2022.
  • Unnamed 62-year-old woman: Died after suffering anaphylactic shock during a mini liposuction performed by medical surgeon Luz Ariana Martínez Bojorquez, who lacked the necessary plastic surgery specialization.

While the Saint Jhonn Clinic has attempted to distance itself from external surgeons using thier facilities, these incidents highlight a systemic issue within Chihuahua’s cosmetic surgery industry.

Seeking Justice and Prevention: A Call for Accountability

José Calderón, while grieving the loss of his wife and the mother of his two children, is steadfast to prevent similar tragedies. He and Mayra’s aunt, Livini Sigala, plan to file a formal complaint, seeking a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. They question how a healthy individual could die during a procedure deemed relatively safe.

This case underscores the need for increased scrutiny and regulation within the cosmetic surgery industry. While Dr. Muñoz is certified by the Mexican Council of Plastic,Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery AC,with his last recertification in 2023,the recurring incidents raise serious questions about patient safety and oversight.

The family hopes that by speaking out, they can prevent future loss and ensure that those seeking cosmetic enhancements are protected from unqualified practitioners and unsafe practices. the pursuit of beauty should not come at the cost of human life.
