AdHoc on Switch 2 & Switch Dispatch Censorship – Statement

After fears of censorship on Switch 2 were allayed for Dispatchhis comedy narrative adventure set in a superhero environment, then we learned that it is finally censored. You already know that it is available now in Nintendo Switch 2 y Nintendo Switch.

Now we have news after the details of its technical section and a possible physical edition. After knowing the size, price, languages and more details, we also learned that refunds are being offered for censorship and now, after Nintendo’s statement, the developers of Dispatch have spoken out on the issue. Although AdHoc I thought the game could be published without censorship, like on PC or PS5, finally had to modify scenes (including covered nudity and muted audio) to comply with the platform’s rules.

Furthermore, the study recognizes that mismanaged communicationsince the censorship notice was incorrectly located in the digital store, which generated confusion and anger among players. AdHoc has apologized, corrected the information in the eShop and confirmed that it is already working with Nintendo to try to release an update in the future that recovers some of the censored content.

Statement from Nick Herman (Co-Founder of AdHoc Studio):

Okay, let’s talk about the Switch release.

We’ve been silent these past few days not because we don’t want to address this issue, but because we’ve been trying to be good partners with Nintendo. They have made their own statement on this matter.

As Nintendo says, any game that is going to be on its platform has to ‘comply with its established content and platform guidelines.’ This is the key point. Nintendo has content guidelines. Our game didn’t meet those guidelines, so we made changes that would allow us to publish it on their platform. That’s what’s happened here. We honestly thought this would be obvious, considering we are the developers who released the fully uncensored version of the game on other platforms.

At first we assumed, like some of you, that as games like The Witcher 3 y Cyberpunk are on the platform with similar and uncensored adult content, Dispatch I could do it too. During the carrying process it became clear that it was not going to be like that. That’s why we asked to include a notice on the store page to inform customers that the content would be different from other platforms. We worked with Nintendo to approve store text.

Where we must assume full responsibility is in the placement of that notice. Again, our intention was to clearly notify people who wanted to purchase the game that the content was censored. Although we didn’t have complete control over the text, we did have control over the location. There was some confusion and we placed the notice in the field that is literally called “Disclaimer”, instead of in the “About The Game” section. We didn’t realize until after the launch, when we saw people saying we should have warned on the store page and we went to check it out. Technically it’s been there the whole time, but in the worst possible place, which makes it feel like we were trying to hide it.

This is 100% our mistake and was corrected on the American store pages a few hours after launch to give it more visibility. We have also added a notice before purchase. At the time of writing, the other regions have already released the change or are in the process of reviewing it.

To our fans who were hoping to play the uncensored version on Switch, we are truly sorry. People have a right to be angry. We have learned many lessons from this. Thank you for continuing with us.

And now what?

We are already working with Nintendo on a path forward. Although we can’t make any concrete promises yet, we are confident that we will be able to release an update to address at least some of the censored content. Let me go ahead and say it: between the development time and the console submission and approval process, we are talking about weeks, not days.

Remember that days before the release the studio said that it “could not comment” on the issue of censorship, and now this seems to explain everything.
