Activision in Backlash Over Call of Duty Black Ops 6 AI Art

Activision Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Artwork in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Activision Blizzard, the gaming giant behind the hugely popular Call of Duty franchise, is facing criticism over the use of AI-generated artwork in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Fans have noticed irregularities in loading screens, calling cards, and promotional images, leading to accusations that Activision is using AI tools to create assets, potentially at the expense of traditional artists.

AI-Generated Art: A Growing Concern?

The controversy ignited with the release of the Season 1 Reloaded update, which introduced a new loading screen featuring "Necroclaus," a zombie Santa Claus. Players pointed out what appeared to be six fingers on Necroclaus’s hand, a common glitch associated with AI-generated images struggling to accurately depict hands.

Further scrutiny revealed other questionable visuals, including a gloved hand used in promotional materials that seemed to have seven fingers.

These instances sparked discussions within the Call of Duty community, with players demanding transparency from Activision regarding the use of AI in game development.

Transparency and Ethical Considerations

The situation highlights the growing debate surrounding AI’s role in the creative industries. While AI tools can offer efficiency and cost-saving benefits, concerns remain about potential job displacement and the artistic integrity of AI-generated content.

Valve, the company behind the popular gaming platform Steam, recently introduced guidelines requiring developers to disclose the use of AI in their games. Activision, however, has yet to provide any official statement regarding the use of AI in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Fans are now calling on Activision to disclose the use of generative AI for art that is included in bundles that are sold. And as others have pointed out, Steam operator Valve now has AI disclosure rules that call on publishers and developers to describe how they use AI in the development and execution of their games. As part of this, Valve has told developers it will include their disclosures on the Steam store page of their game, “so customers can also understand how the game uses AI.” Currently, Call of Duty’s Steam page has no such disclosure.

The potential implications of widespread AI-generated content in games are significant.

Call to Action: Demand Transparency

It’s crucial for developers, publishers, and gamers to engage in open conversations about the ethical implications of AI in gaming. Transparency from companies like Activision regarding the use of AI-generated assets is essential. Players deserve to know how their games are created and the role AI plays in shaping their experiences.

Let Activision know what you think. Demand transparency about AI usage in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
