Dr. Bang-bu Yun (84) and Dr. Si-hyung Lee (93), two giants of the Korean medical community, cited strength training as the secret to maintaining their health.

The two appeared on KBS 2TV’s entertainment program ‘Problem Son of the Rooftop Room Season 2’, which aired on the 1st, and revealed their daily exercise habits that help them maintain vitality even in old age.

Dr. Lee Si-hyung, 93 years old, also said that regular strength training is the key to health. He said, “When I wake up in the morning, I do gymnastics and stretching, and do push-ups and squats. I exercise for 30 to 40 minutes every morning, and in the evening, I walk around the apartment complex three times.”

Dr. Lee, who never skips exercise even while on a business trip, said, “The hardest thing to change is exercise habits,” and emphasized, “Good exercise is not something you make time for, but something that makes exercise part of your life.”

Dr. Bangbu Yun, 84, also said, “I work out at the gym for three hours a day. I walk every day, whether it’s snowing or raining, and I always do strength training.” He described himself as “somewhat addicted to exercise” and said, “Among all addictions, exercise addiction is a good addiction.”

In fact, he explained that he walks 7 km a day in about 1 hour and 3 minutes, and continues strength training using 6 machines at the gym.

Experts cite prevention of sarcopenia as a reason why strength training is especially important in old age. As we age, muscle mass and strength naturally decrease, which leads to reduced walking speed and worsening sense of balance, increasing the risk of falls. Strength training strengthens the lower body and core muscles and helps maintain stable daily movements.

Additionally, muscles are an important organ that regulates blood sugar, and strength training contributes to lowering the risk of diabetes and metabolic diseases. When the muscles that support the joints are strengthened, the burden on the knees and lower back is reduced, which can also be expected to prevent chronic pain.
