AAP Leaders Lose Delhi Assembly Seats with Cong Votes Outscoring Winning Margins

Congress Votes Nearly Match BJP Margins, Impacting AAP Election Losses in Delhi Assembly

The recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections have brought to light a significant nuance in the voting patterns of the electorate. Several prominent leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Chief Arvind Kejriwal and key figures like Manish Sisodia, have recorded narrow losses in their respective constituencies. Notably, the margin of victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in these seats was, in many cases, smaller than the votes garnered by the Indian National Congress (Congress), thus significantly affecting the election outcome.

Kejriwal’s Loss in New Delhi

Arvind Kejriwal, who had won New Delhi three times since 2013, faced his toughest challenge yet. BJP candidate Parvesh Verma defeated Kejriwal by a margin of just 4,089 votes. Interestingly, Sandeep Dikshit from the Congress secured third place with 4,568 votes, indicating that Congress support was crucial but not enough to clinch the seat.

Manish Sisodia’s Defeat in Jangpura

Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also suffered a narrow loss in Jangpura, where he narrowly fell to BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by 675 votes. The Congress candidate Farhad Suri managed to secure 7,350 votes, suggesting strong Congress support. Sisodia had been a three-time MLA from Patparganj, but was fielded in Jangpura to aid the AAP strategy.

Bharadwaj’s Loss in Greater Kailash

Saurabh Bharadwaj, a popular AAP candidate and three-time MLA with a portfolio as a Cabinet minister, lost his seat in Greater Kailash to BJP’s Shikha Roy by 3,188 votes. The Congress candidate, Garvit Singhvi, garnered 6,711 votes, reflecting a strong Congress showing in the constituency. Bharadwaj’s defeat was unexpected, given his prior successes and high expectations.

Bharti’s Loss in Malviya Nagar

Bharti, a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court lawyer, had to concede defeat in Malviya Nagar to BJP’s Satish Upadhyay by 2,131 votes. Congress candidate Jitender Kumar Kochar won 6,770 votes. Despite his legal expertise and long-standing presence in politics, Bharti’s loss was symptomatic of the tight race in the constituency.

Deputy Speaker’s Defeat in Madipur

Another significant loss for AAP came from Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla, who faltered in the SC-reserved Madipur constituency. Birla, a three-time Mangol Puri MLA, lost to BJP’s Kailash Gangwal by 10,899 votes. However, Congress candidate J P Panwar managed to secure 17,958 votes, a strong performance by the opposition in the region.

Narrow Defeats in Other Seats

The pattern of close defeats was not limited to these prominent leaders. Several other AAP candidates lost their seats by similarly narrow margins. Notable among them were Durgesh Pathak, Saurabh Mohaniya, and others from constituencies like Badli, Chhatarpur, Mehrauli, Nangloi Jat, Timarpur, and Trilokpuri. The Congress once again played a significant role in these contests, with candidates polling substantial votes despite losing.

Strategic Implications for Political Blocs

The election results shine a light on the complex dynamics within the political landscape of Delhi. Many members of the INDIA bloc, which includes AAP, had advocated for a strategic alliance between the AAP and Congress. The Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party also backed AAP candidates. However, these alliances did not yield the expected results, with Congress failing to secure any seats despite its strong presence in critical constituencies.

Congress’ Marginal Gain

While the Congress did not manage to secure any seats in the Assembly, they saw a slight rise in their overall vote share compared to 2020. This marginal increase indicates potential voter support but did not translate into electoral victories. For the AAP, the election outcome is likely to prompt intense soul-searching and strategic reassessment.

In the wake of these results, the AAP and its allies will need to critically examine their strategies and voter outreach mechanisms. The Congress, while lacking concrete victories, demonstrated its enduring relevance in key areas. As DELHI enters a new political phase, these lessons from the election will be crucial.
