A controversy erupted in New Delhi when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal was arrested by the police after a dramatic protest. She dumped three mini-truckloads of garbage near the residence of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to highlight severe waste management issues in the city.
Protest Puts Spotlight on Waste Management Crisis
Maliwal embarked on her protest by visiting Vikaspuri, complaining that the streets there were clogged with waste, posing serious health and hygiene risks to the residents. Accompanied by a group of supporters, she collected garbage across the area and transported it in three mini trucks to Kejriwal’s residence at 5, Ferozeshah Road.
Public Display of Protest Leads to Detention
Upon arriving at the residence, Maliwal and her supporters were met by hundreds of women holding placards that read, “Muskuraiye, AAP Delhi Mein Hain” (Smell this, AAP is in Delhi). Using a shovel, Maliwal tossed waste onto the ground outside Kejriwal’s house. Consequently, female police officers confronted her, leading to her detention and subsequent arrest.
Detention and Registration of FIR
Maliwal was taken to the Parliament Street Police Station. She was released after a few hours, with an FIR registered against her under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly violating prohibitory orders.
Maliwal’s Statement on the Condition of Delhi
In an interview with reporters post her release, Maliwal expressed her frustration with Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP government’s failure to address the waste problem. She said, “For the past ten years, Arvind Kejriwal has ensured that Delhi becomes a giant garbage dump. Roads are broken, drains are overflowing, and waste is piling up everywhere. Women and children are forced to live in unhygienic conditions, and yet the government does nothing.”
Video Evidence Shared on X
Earlier, Maliwal shared a video on X, showing herself and others gathering garbage from Vikaspuri. In the post, she wrote, “There have been heaps of garbage on the roads in Vikaspuri for years. People are very angry. They are going to collect all this garbage and dump it at Kejriwal’s house.”
She added, “The condition of the entire Delhi has deteriorated. The filth and stink that Delhiites face daily will be faced by Kejriwal ji today. The public is coming, Kejriwal ji, don’t be afraid.”
Background of Maliwal and Kejriwal’s Strained Relationship
The dispute between Maliwal and Kejriwal has been ongoing since last year. Maliwal alleged she was subjected to improper behavior at Kejriwal’s residence by his personal secretary. The court is currently hearing this matter.
