Live video footage showed police in riot gear marching on the campus in upper Manhattan, the epicenter of nationwide student protests against Israel’s war on Gaza. The police used an armored car with a bridge mechanism to gain access to the second floor of the building.

Officials said they used flares to disperse the crowd, but denied using tear gas during the operation.

Officers were soon seen leading handcuffed protesters to police buses waiting outside the university gates. NYPD spokesman Carlos Nieves said there were no immediate reports of injuries after the arrests.

“We’re clearing it,” police shouted as they marched to the barricaded entrance to the building.

“Shame! Shame!” chanted many of the watching students still outside on campus.

One protester at Columbia University, who gave her first name only as Sophie, told The Guardian that police barricaded protesters inside buildings before arresting them. “It will not be forgotten,” she said. – This is no longer an issue of Israel and Palestine. This is a human rights issue, a free speech issue, and an issue for Columbia students.”

The police operation, which was largely over within a couple of hours,

The Definition Of Anti-Semitism Broadened In A First…

In the midst of a period of high tensions on American campuses, linked to pro-Palestinian demonstrations, the House of Representatives voted on Wednesday 1is May, to broaden the definition of anti-Semitism used by the Ministry of Education.

Part of the American political class accuses the demonstrators in universities of “anti-Semitism”, evoking, among other things, slogans hostile to Israel, a great ally of the United States in the Middle East.

The bill, adopted in the afternoon by elected officials from both sides, uses the definition of anti-Semitism proposed by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). According to this, “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews which can manifest itself in hatred towards them. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism target Jewish and non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, community institutions and places of worship..

An uncertain passage to the Senate

Critics of the proposed law, however, believe that this definition prevents certain criticism of the State of Israel, which the IHRA defends. They accuse parliamentarians of pushing for its adoption in order to curb freedom of expression on American campuses.

No One Expected So Little, The Birth Rate…

#expected #birth #rate #fell #sharply #dont #close #kindergartens

You can also listen to the analysis in audio version.

It makes a big difference if you have 1,872 or 1,435 children born in the district in a year. Especially when it only takes three years for such a slump. In Liberec, the number of births dropped by almost 24 percent between 2020 and 2023. In addition, these are only preliminary data for the entire district, so logically the situation will be even more dramatic in some municipalities.

“The explanation for the drop in the birth rate is probably demographic, i.e. weaker parental years, perhaps a reduced level of certainty in the time of covid,” says Liberec Deputy Mayor for Culture, Education and Tourism Ivan Langr.

In addition, Liberec itself is not so bad, it fell “only” by 18 percent. That is roughly the same as the average in the rest of the country.

On the one hand, the whole of the Czech Republic will have to deal with the drop in the birth rate in the coming years – as few children as last year were last born in our country at the turn of the millennium.

Pro-Palestinian Occupation Turns Portland State University Library Into…

The recent occupation of Portland State University’s Millar Library by pro-Palestinian protesters has brought attention to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The library, a symbol of education and knowledge, has now been transformed into a makeshift fortress, with students barricading the doors and windows in a show of solidarity with Palestinians.

Portland State University has a history of protest, dating back to the anti-Vietnam War movement in the 1970s. The current occupation of the library signifies the students’ determination to demand justice and raise awareness about the Israeli military operation in Gaza.

While the protesters have faced criticism for their tactics, the underlying message remains strong. Faisal Ibraheem, a Muslim student, expressed his support, saying, “There has to be something done, and if it comes down to this, they might actually start doing something.”

On the other hand, Michael Bausch acknowledged the activists’ goals but questioned the effectiveness of their approach. He emphasized the importance of creating a better student coalition and allowing everyone in the community to have their voices heard, suggesting that inclusive dialogue can lead to meaningful solutions.

The demands put forth by the students include cutting ties with Boeing Co.,
