Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield’s Dynamic Discusses the Future of Deadpool

In a recent interview with Variety, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield reconnected for their "Actors on Actors" segment. The pair, known for their comedic on-screen chemistry, discussed a range of topics, including the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Garfield’s return as Spider-Man, and the potential future of their respective characters.

Reynolds, who first donned the Deadpool suit in 2009 and revived it in the smash-hit Deadpool (2016), praised Garfield’s performance in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He specifically highlighted the emotional impact Garfield’s reprisal of the role had on audiences considering the context of a multiverse story.

He doesn’t shy away from calling Garfield "[bleep] amazing" and said, "You guys did it in such a way that I burst into tears. They realize in an instant that they desperately missed this person, but they didn’t know they missed him."

Garfield echoed the emotionality of the experience, stating, "I’m so grateful for it, in retrospect. And even during, I was like, “Yeah, this is soul work." One of the first photos of me as a 3-year-old is in a Spider-Man costume that my mother made out of felt. And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this person, this character, it means so f**king much to me.’"

Talking about Deadpool’s future, Reynolds revealed a surprising sentiment. While the recently released Deadpool & Wolverine is the highest-grossing live-action film of 2024, earning over $1.33 billion globally, Reynolds stated that he doesn’t envision himself committing to another Deadpool film anytime soon. He explained, "I don’t know how many more there are in me.

For Reynolds, the life of a superhero actor is demanding, requiring a level of commitment that can infringe on his personal life. He emphasized, "It had been six years since the last one, and part of the reason is that it swallowed my whole life. You can’t take your hand off the stick all the way through development, through post-production into marketing and promo."

With four children, Reynolds desires to prioritize his family and recognizes that the demands of the franchise could negatively impact that balance. He concluded, "I don’t know what the future of Deadpool will be, but I do know that we made the movie to be a complete experience instead of a commercial for another one."

Despite his hesitancy towards further Deadpool installments,

There are rumors about Reynolds potentially appearing in the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars film, and Garfield might even reprise his role as Spider-Man in a future Spider-Man 4. Only time will tell what the future holds for these beloved characters, but one thing is certain: the chemistry and camaraderie between Reynolds and Garfield continue to be a treat for fans to enjoy.
