Embracing a Day Without the Internet: A Personal Experiment
Would you consider going a day without the internet, especially on the eve of the Super Bowl? I did, and I’ll share my experience with you. Let me paint the picture for you.
I stood on a ridge in the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, New Mexico, surrounded by pinyon trees and red-barked pines, listening to the trill of dark-eyed juncos jostling through the underbrush. Yet, amidst all this winter beauty, my phone chimed—again and again. Alerts from friends, discounts on cleaning products, and security camera notifications flooded in. Enough—time for a challenge. Time to embrace a day of quiet without the internet.
My No-Internet Ground Rules
The internet’s pervasiveness in daily life meant I had to set strict guidelines for my internet-free day. I thought back to my childhood and rotary phones, recalling how my parents planned car trips with paper maps. My experiment felt like a step back in time. My only concession: voice calls.
At 10:30 p.m. the night before, I unplugged my T-Mobile Home Internet gateway, disabling my home internet, including Alexa devices, streaming apps, and security cameras. Turning on Focus Mode on my Android phone, I added all apps to the list, except for voice calls.
The Experiment: Day of the No-Internet Experiment
The morning started well. My non-internet-connected alarm clock woke me on time. Instead of scrolling through social media or checking emails, I read a Louise Penny mystery with my morning coffee. It was blissful, free from digital distractions.
Not a bad way to start your morning.
With silent phones and a sense of adventure, my husband and I explored estate sales using a 2002 road atlas. We faced a few challenges, but eventually found the sale in a remote community. I found a vintage glass deviled egg plate for a few bucks.
Moving Around Without Google Maps
Directions from the estate sale organizer in the form of old-fashioned verbal instructions enabled us to navigate effectively. Without Google Maps or real-time traffic updates, the trip had an old-time feel, but we managed fine.
A Night Without Streaming
Without streaming services, we relied on an antenna to access entertainment. Scrolling through channels, we ended up watching an old Western movie and solving a jigsaw puzzle. It was a far cry from my usual streaming habits but enjoyable in its own right.
The Aftermath
The best part of my day was the pause on micro-interruptions—the alerts, emails, and social media notifications that usually demand my attention. After much fretting over security cameras and other digital conveniences, the day wasn’t as bad as expected. In fact, it was more pleasant than usual.
I developed a stronger appreciation for life’s simpler pleasures. Interacting with my surroundings, solving problems without technological assistance, and just being present created a new perspective.
Lessons Learned
Most notably, I became more discerning about notifications. I’ve learned to resist the urge to check every frivolous notification. Instead, I’m focusing more on reducing them, prioritizing essential alerts while ignoring others.
My experiment taught me to rely less on technology for every minor task, fostering a sense of problem-solving and independence. I feel more comfortable with simple solutions, a refreshing change from digital dependency.
Final Thoughts
The internet provides invaluable tools and connections, but it can also be overwhelming. My internet-free day highlighted the benefits of disconnecting—greater focus, improved concentration, and a stronger appreciation for life’s simple joys.
Consider giving it a try. Whether for a day, a few hours, or even just during specific activities, turning off the internet can be rewarding. Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by your digital life, take a break. Enjoy the quiet and embrace the day without constant interruptions.
