Ravens Cut Ties With Diontae Johnson: Was the Trade Deadline Deal a Bust?
Just weeks after acquiring veteran wide receiver Diontae Johnson in a trade deadline move, the Baltimore Ravens have surprisingly waived the 28-year-old. The move comes after a tumultuous stint with the team, marked by limited playing time, disciplinary issues, and a lack of on-field production.
A Short and Unproductive Run
Since joining Baltimore on October 29th, Johnson appeared in only four games, playing a total of 39 snaps. He managed to secure just one reception while being targeted five times by quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Johnson’s troubles culminated in a suspension from last week’s game against the New York Giants for conduct detrimental to the team. Reports indicated that he had refused to enter the game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1st, leading to the suspension.
The Ravens mutually excused Johnson from all team activities this week before ultimately deciding to release him outright.
A Failed Trade?
The Ravens traded a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers for Johnson, a move that appeared to bolster their receiving corps. However, the deal ultimately failed to pay dividends. Johnson had a more productive stint in Carolina earlier this season, catching 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven games.
Looking Ahead:
Johnson will now become a free agent next season, seeking his fourth team since the end of the 2023 season. It remains to be seen where he will land and whether he can regain his former form.
The Ravens, meanwhile, must move forward without Johnson, hoping to find consistency in their receiving corps.
