“Imagine a world fed by the same energy that supplies the sun and stars. Today we take the biggest step so far to turn this dream into reality, through an investment agreement and purchase with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS),” according to Google representatives.
Through their partnership with CFS, the company will purchase 200 megawatts (MW) energy -free energy from their first shopping power plant, which will be built in Chesterfield, Virginia. What is energy through merger and how does this concept approach CFS?
The merger is the same process that feeds the sun and the stars. This involves taking over the light atomic nuclei and heating them at extreme temperatures, over 100 million degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, the fuel becomes plasma, and when it is dense enough, the nuclei fuses, releasing a huge amount of energy that can be captured to generate carbon -free electricity.
In order for the merger to be successful, the company must prove what are the technological ways that can produce more energy than it consumes.
CFS aims to use high -temperature high -temperature superconductor magnets like a donut, called Tokamak, to confine and control plasma, creating the necessary conditions for the fusion to take place. This is the basic innovation of their demonstrative car, which is currently assembled in Massachusetts.
