After a distinguished playing career, Jonny Evans is transitioning into a player development role at Manchester United, focusing on nurturing young talent and facilitating loan moves.
Jonny Evans, reflecting on his career, stated, “I’ll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football.”
Manchester United has announced that Evans’s new position will involve spearheading loan arrangements for the club’s emerging players. He will collaborate with director of football Jason Wilcox to optimize player growth and prepare promising youngsters for integration into the first team.
Evans shared his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player’s development. I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.”
Wilcox Praises Evans’s Influence

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, emphasized Evans’s suitability for the role, noting, “His knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.”
Evans’s journey includes leaving Old Trafford in 2015 and returning eight years later under manager erik ten Hag.
During his time away, Evans was instrumental in Leicester City’s FA Cup victory in 2021. He then rejoined Manchester United on a one-year contract in 2023, securing another FA Cup title in 2024 before extending his stay for an additional season.
A Storied International Career
Evans represented Northern Ireland on the international stage 107 times between 2006 and 2024, scoring six goals and captaining his nation on 15 occasions.
His international debut occurred as an 18-year-old in a memorable 3-2 victory over Spain in Belfast in September 2006. His final appearance was against the same opposition in a 5-1 amiable defeat in Mallorca in June 2024.
He officially retired from international football two months later.
Evans was part of Michael O’Neill‘s squad that participated in the Euro 2016 finals in France.
He received an MBE in 2023 in recognition of his contributions to football in Northern Ireland.
