The Teacher: Streaming Comedy on Education Issues

The book “Cometierra” by the Buenos Aires writer Dolores Reyes until just a few months ago was in the center of the scene, being subject to controversies and strong criticism when considered “pornographic” by some conservative sectors that rejected their inclusion in the curriculum of some Buenos Aires schools. Despite this, the novel managed not only to continue circulating, but won greater popularity, thus strengthening the debate about issues such as gender violence and the representation of indigenous women.

The appointment is not accidental since the protagonist of the series “The Professor”, available on the Disney+streaming platform, together with the educational community in their entirety face this type of discussions daily. In each of the eight episodes that make up this first season, through humor, satire and very enjoyable, issues such as the inclusion of certain contents in the classrooms and the way of addressing them are placed in dispute and consideration. Through literature, “the teacher” builds spaces for dialogue and confrontation where different visions of the world are exhibited. And there lies one of the main reasons for its success.

The series

“The teacher” (English Teacher, 2024), created, produced and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, explores many of the contradictions and pressures that are current today. It does so with a school in Austin that, although it is described as very liberal, is part of the state of Texas, ideologically located in the opposite path.

It has a traditional Sitcom format remembering other school productions such as “Abbott Elementary” (on the same platform). It is worth mentioning that he addresses, perhaps like no other, the so -called cultural battle from the point of view – in most cases – from Evan Márquez, a gay English teacher who is his main character.

The series focuses on their daily experiences, portraying the clash of ideologies and reigning tensions between colleagues, managers, parents and students.

The interesting thing is that he manages to do it very funny. “The teacher” presents just a handful of characters, and they all enjoy very good chemistry. There are endless funny situations, excellent rhythm management and fresh and intelligent dialogues. An amalgamate cast that seems to get perfectly from the initial minutes.

Each episode formulates a school conflict that tries to solve lowering the tone through humor. Some touch the absurd, as is the case of the initial chapter, which also serves to indicate the general tone of the comedy.

Evan, something like a local language teacher, is cited from the direction after being denounced by the mother of a student, accusing him of influencing the sexuality of his son after having seen him kiss another teacher (Jordan Firstman). The behavior, warned of inappropriate, also exposes the few tools that the school address has, in this case commanded by Grant Moretti (Enrico Colantoni), to defend and sit positions in favor of teachers. A pull that, on many occasions, tends to favor and calm retrograde claims.

This fact will be only the initial point, since, throughout the episodes, other situations will be presented, all tending to explore the limits of tolerance, extreme sensibilities and morality. For example, in one of them a group of students must dress as a woman officiating as cheers of their classmates -a traditional school event that is problematic in these times -; In another, the issue of weapons and shooting clubs will arise, which ironically challenge the security of the educational environment; The presence of metal detectors will be discussed; Then, students will simulate psychological disorders to avoid academic responsibilities; and in a different one the issue of cell phones will arise in order to record the exhibitions of teachers. The cultural battle is always very funny, addressing tensions that are completely real.

In general, the series dialogues with a concept of power that, daily, seems to run in favor of parents and students. These are demanding, transferring any type of limits. Faced with this, the series jokes with juggling that teachers should do to maintain their job without being too progressive or conservative. “The professor” exposes teachers as perfect equilors and institutions as companies in which the client always has to be right.

Without going any further, Evan is accompanied by Gwen Sanders (Stephanie Koenig), a history teacher who is now forced to teach the two versions/visions of the Spanish Inquisition. As recurring characters, Markie Hillridge (Sean Patton), a hard -liberal physical education teacher on the outside and Rick Santana (Carmen Christopher), a quite innocent school counselor and drinking to drink. In order to exploit Evan’s sentimental and sexual life, Harry will enter the scene (Langston Kerman), professor of physics also Gay, who will bring with him a series of complications to Evan and his surroundings.

Alvarez achieves with scripts that occur and effective that actions move away from stereotypes. His series is fresh and enjoys a strong identity, raising questions and inviting viewers to reflect on the dynamics of an educational ecosystem too fragile.

Beyond entertainment, the series functions as an acidic and revealing radiography of the contemporary dilemmas that public schools face: the struggle to maintain teaching authority in a context of growing political correction, the tension between different ideological visions and the constant battle to define what knowledge deserves to be taught. With a scathing but empathic look, “The teacher” He laughs at both militant conservatism and bureaucratic progressivism, without clearly aligning with any, and in that uncomfortable balance it invites deep reflection on the social role of education and the complex dynamics that are woven day by day in the classroom.

“The professor” despite his somewhat Simplón title, he has from humor – one at mounts – much to say, providing strong conclusions and a realistic day -to -day look in the current school environment. Undoubtedly, one of the best comedies in recent months that has recently been renewed for a second season.
