Turkish starlet Arda Güler is dedicated to Real Madrid but acknowledges he might need to re-evaluate his place with the team if he doesn’t get a more prominent role under the new leadership of Xabi Alonso.
Two summers ago, Madrid enthusiastically welcomed Güler after his breakthrough at Fenerbahçe. However, the creative midfielder’s participation was limited while Carlo Ancelotti was the manager.
The 20-year-old’s La Liga playing time increased from 373 minutes in his first year to 1,249 in his second, yet many felt the left-footed playmaker wasn’t used enough. Despite this, Ancelotti consistently praised Güler, expressing his belief that he woudl become a “very critically important player” for Madrid in the future.
Despite accumulating just under 1,500 minutes across all competitions last season due to intense competition for spots in Madrid’s attack, Güler contributed 14 goals.
Currently in the United States for the Club World Cup, the 20-year-old experienced his first match under Alonso in a 1-1 draw against Al Hilal, where he played the second half. Güler stated that he already feels “more important” with the Spaniard in charge.
“I feel good with him as he likes to control the tempo, he wants more short passes, and he sees me as a midfielder, and that’s better for me,” he told MARK.
