Crisis in Sudan: A Report from the Nuba Mountains
Table of Contents
A harrowing look at the conflict in Sudan and the plight of refugees in the Nuba Mountains.
A recent report highlights the devastating consequences of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, with a focus on the experiences of those seeking refuge in the Nuba Mountains. Contributor nicolas Niarchos recounts his journey to a refugee camp, where members of Sudan’s minority Black ethnic groups face dire conditions, including severe hunger. Niarchos, speaking with David Remnick, emphasized the significance of the territory to the Nuba people: “they feel safe being there because they have managed to resist genocide before by hiding in these mountains. And then you start seeing the children with their distended bellies, and you start hearing the stories of the people who fled.” The civil war involves the Sudanese Army battling the Rapid Support Forces (R.S.F.). Once allies, these groups now control diffrent regions, leading to infrastructure destruction and atrocities against civilians, including killings, starvation, and sexual violence. The conflict is fueled by a combination of “supremacist ideology” and the practice of “giving ‘spoils’ to troops rather of paying them,” according to Niarchos. Wanis, one of Niarchos’s sources, shared a chilling encounter with an R.S.F. soldier who threatened, “If you go to the Nuba Mountains, we’ll reach you there. You Nuba, we’re supposed to kill you like dogs.”
