Since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have settled into a $29.6 million estate in montecito, California.However, before establishing their permanent residence, the couple spent six months on Vancouver Island, Canada. According to Frank McGinity, a Navy veteran and their former neighbor in Vancouver, the Sussexes kept to themselves.

McGinity recounts in his memoir, Get Off Your Street, his attempt to welcome the couple with a gift of films about the area’s history. He stated, “I have a big house next to Harry and Meghan’s property. [Thay] live on old McCormick property and I went up to their gate with the films on a CD, but they weren’t interested.” He continued, “The gate guy turned me away and wouldn’t take the film, just saying, ‘They’re not interested.’ I was trying to be neighborly. If they were interested in the neighborhood, I’ve got a lot of facts.”

Following a family vacation after their South African tour with Prince Archie in 2019, Harry and markle briefly resided in Canada. McGinity expressed surprise at their choice of the Riven Rock Estate, noting its appeal to an older demographic. “We don’t see them very much around here,” he remarked.”It’s surprising they came here. It’s where the elephants come to die.” He also noted in his book that his own home suffered significant damage from mudslides that resulted in 23 fatalities, leaving Harry and Markle’s property resembling “a sea of mud or a moonscape.”

Montecito Neighbors Echo Similar Sentiments

The Sussexes’ Montecito neighbors have voiced similar opinions regarding the couple’s isolation. Richard Mineards told the Daily Mail, “I personally don’t think that Meghan is an asset to our community…She doesn’t really go out or get involved with the community. Harry has to a certain extent, because he’s quite jolly…but Meghan doesn’t seem to get seen anywhere.” Similarly, filmmaker Ulrike Grunewald commented, “The cultural life is very lively, but everything often takes place in closed circles, and Harry and Meghan rarely take part in these activities. They seem to have isolated themselves a lot.”

Despite their perceived lack of engagement with the local community, the Duke and Duchess are known to socialize with a prominent circle of celebrities. Markle reportedly spends time with Hollywood figures such as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and Oprah Winfrey, who are also Montecito residents. Harry is said to enjoy the company of David Foster and his wife, Katherine McPhee. other past neighbors include Ellen DeGeneres, Rob Lowe, and Ariana Grande.
